Download Tumblr Photos With TumblRipper

The micro-blogging service Tumblr has risen considerably in popularity in the last two years. It basically offers free micro-blogs to registered users, who can post media or textual contents on the blogs then. If you have never heard of Tumblr before, you are probably wondering how it compares to WordPress. The one big difference is that Tumblr is a more bare-bones system concentrating on the simplicity of the platform itself. This attracts a user-base that wants to start posting right away, without first installing dozens of plugins, widgets, and theme modifications. Tumblr offers built-in social networking features, like the ability to share someone else’s post on Tumblr easily.

A good starting place for new interested users is the explore page on Tumblr which highlights some of the more popular blogs on the site.

If you have a particular photo blog that you are interested in on the site, you’d probably look for a way to download some of the photos posted on it to your computer. While you could do that by right-clicking and selecting Save for every photo your are interested in, you’d probably do not want to do that if the blog is hosting dozens or even hundreds of photos.

Enter TumblRipper, a portable application for Windows that lets you download all posted photos of a Tumblr blog to your computer. When you start the program, you are asked to enter the url of the the desired Tumblr blog and a local directory for the downloaded photos.

A click on the load button afterwards downloads the photos to the local PC. The program displays status updates in its interface, highlighting the amount of photos found on the blog, and the downloading progress. Photos are automatically downloaded in the best available resolution, and existing photos will be skipped automatically, provided that you have not changed the save directory in the meantime. A small text file is created in the download directory as well containing the url of the blog that was saved.

If you are regularly downloading photos from Tumblr, you may want to give TumblRipper a try, as it can automate the process for you. If you are more of a selective downloader, the program’s all or nothing approach may not be suitable for you. You can naturally use the program to download all of your own Tumblr photos as well.
