Let Others Contact You Through Your Own Wi-Fi Network

Do you want other people to contact you through your own WiFi network. Or would you like to share your home wireless network with neighbors? Change the SSID.

The Wi-Fi network at your home has a public name, also known as SSID, that will often show up on your neighbor’s computer or any other mobile device that is within the range of your wireless network.

The name of a wireless network (or SSID) rarely says anything about the owner of that network and that’s good because most people won’t like the idea of sharing their Wi-Fi network with others. Some have even suggested using scary and unusual names for SSIDs (like “Police Van”) to discourage Wi-Fi theft.

 

However, if you are on the other side and want people to actually use your Wireless connection – maybe for a monthly fee – a free service like Wifis.org can be of some help.

WiFis.org provides you a unique URL like www.wifis.org/labnol. You need to change your network’s name (SSID) to that URL and it will then show up under “Available Wireless Networks” on other computers that are within your wireless range.

If your neighbors happen to type that URL in the browser, they’ll see a contact form which they can use (“Hi, Can I borrow your Wi-Fi for an hour?”) to directly get in touch with you but without knowing your real email address.

You can also write your WiFis.org SSIDs as wif.is/ or .wifis.org.

This is definitely a neat idea though there’s an alternative as well. You can create a special email address to advertise your Wi-Fi network in the neighborhood and then set it as your SSID – something like BorrowMyWifiATgmailDOTcom. In either case, do make sure that your Wi-Fi is secured with WPA2.

iOS: The popular email client for Macs, Sparrow, released its iPhone version today. On top of sporting a similar look to the desktop client, the app comes packed with a few handy features, including swipe control of the entire interface, a smart contact list that sorts your contacts, and a few features that will be familiar to those who use the Mac version.

The desktop version of Sparrow is our pick for the best email client on Mac OS X and for the most part the mobile version sticks to the same design. You control most of the app with swipe gestures instead of button presses, it imports pictures from Facebook of your contacts, and its most handy feature is that it lists you most frequent contacts at the top of a list instead of alphabetical order. It also has the same threaded conversation view as the desktop client, a great search engine, a quick sender switch, and one feature iPhone users have been asking for since the iPhone was first introduced: a mark all as read button.

Two big problems with the iPhone version of Sparrow should be noted. First, it doesn't support POP email accounts. If you have your own email server and it uses POP, don't bother with Sparrow. If you're on the likes of Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, or your own with IMAP support you'll be fine. However, the other big caveat is that Sparrow does not support push notifications. This means you have to manually check your email and you won't be notified when new mail arrives. It's a pretty big missing feature that you should consider before checking it out. Sparrow is available now in the iTunes App Store for $2.99.

Comments And Contact Me Form Closed

Hi guys I was quite busy last few days due to which I was unable to pay attention to my blog for nearly 4-5 days. Day before yesterday when I checked my e-mails I was shocked to see 96 mails from contact me form. As days are passing number of emails are increasing and most of them contain silly and same questions whose answers were already posted on blog. Please note that I am not a kid nor a newbie in hacking I am a Computer and Network Security Professional and I really try my best to keep things as simple as possible but when I see questions from people I see lack in basics and sometimes incredible stupidity.Sorry for that but that's true. So from yesterday I closed comments and contact me form. Don't think that I don't like to answer emails (no matter how much silly stuff people ask) but so far as I can see at present by blog can't replace a job. Answering several emails is not easy and they does take lot of time since sometimes its nearly impossible to figure out what really someone has asked. I love to blog but the reality is since Google Panda Update our visitor level has dropped more than 90% and blog doesn't generate enough income to spend a lot of time for that. From today I am closing contact form and comments, also you'll see little slow down in my regular blogging and facebook activities. By the way I'll try to post at least 2-3 posts every week and all emails sent to me till closing time will surely be answered.


I'll become regular when my blog will start generating enough income to make me feel as an alternative to my job. Thanks for being a regular reader.
