Make an “Internet TV”

There seems to be a contest going on between Apple and Google about whose “Internet TV” is going to finally take off.  However,  I find their versions of “Internet TV” to be pointless when one can create one themselves in about 30 seconds.

These days all of the content that is available through a television service is also available through the internet. Whether you have to download it, stream it on the network’s website, watch it on Hulu, or watch it on Netflix, you can always find it. So, for a while now I have been watching television solely through my old laptop computer which I leave connected to my television set with an HDMI cable and then I use a wireless keyboard and mouse as a remote.  This version of  TV watching can be annoying if you are an avid watcher, but if you just follow a couple shows and enjoy watching movies then this a perfect solution to save you money whilst getting more features than a traditional TV.  This homemade way of watching TV is beneficial for many reasons, the main one being that you no longer have to pay a monthly fee to Dish or Direct or whoever you buy TV service from. Other benefits include having the ability to play your music collection through your TV’s speakers, the ability to watch YouTube videos, stream Netflix, or to simply surf the internet with a huge screen.

If you want your Internet TV to be permanently connected but you do not have an extra computer, you could always buy one of these very cheap and tiny desktop computers.  At the very least, if you have both a TV and a computer it is good to know how to connect them (simply with an HDMI cable) so you can watch movies on something bigger than your fifteen inch laptop.

Airtel Subscribers Can Quickly Check their Internet Usage

If you are subscribed to any of the Airtel Broadband Internet plans, here's how you can quickly check your Internet usage for the current cycle.

This is only for Airtel broadband subscribers in India.

Your Airtel Internet connection has a monthly data transfer limit and once you exceed it, Airtel will either reduce your download speed (if you are on an “unlimited” plan) or you may have to pay for all the extra data that you download in the current billing cycle (details).

 

So how do you determine how much data you have consumed in the current month?

There are several software programs available that let you monitor your Internet data usage but there’s a much simpler alternative – just go to airtel.in and the page will automatically display details of your data usage.

You’ll know how much data you have downloaded in the current cycle and how much more data can you download before your Internet speed is downgraded under Fair Usage Policy (FUP). It detects your subscriber ID automatically so you don’t have to log-in manually.

No Internet On March 8 ???

The Internet could go dark for millions of users as early as March 8 because of a virus that has corrupted computers in more than 100 countries.The computer script, called DNSChanger Trojan, taps into fraudulent servers, sending users of the Web to unintended - and sometimes illegal - sites.

The primary impact of this infection is that it caused web surfers to be sent to fraudulent websites by changing what is called the DNS settings on compromised computers.The Domain Name System (DNS) is the backbone of the Internet's address scheme and DNS servers are special computers around the world that act as Internet traffic cops providing directions to websites that you wish to visit.

Though the FBI has shut down the DNSChanger network and put up surrogate servers, they warned the solution was only temporary - and the court-ordered deadline is March 8. When the FBI pinched this group, if they had shut down the rogue DNS servers, everyone that was infected would have instantly been cut off from the Internet so the FBI chose a different strategy.They decided to get a court order allowing them to replace the rogue DNS servers with legitimate stand-ins so that all the infected computers wouldn't get cut off without warning giving them time to get the word out.

Both Windows and Mac OS users are at risk for this infection because it exploits your browser, not your operating system. If you are somewhat technical, you can do a self-check of your computer to make sure you're not infected by comparing your computer's DNS setting to the list of rogue DNS servers

ClipGrab Lets You Download Videos From The Internet

When I’m working with the Firefox browser, I use the excellent Download Helper extension for all of my video downloading needs. It is unobtrusive on the page, and supports hundreds, if not thousands of different sites. The extension detects videos playing on a page automatically, and links to the download versions so that you can download the videos to your PC. The core limitation here is that you need to start the video for a second or so, before it is detected.

That’s the main reason why I sometimes prefer desktop apps, as they let me download videos without playing or opening the video pages first. ClipGrab is a free program for Windows that comes with built-in YouTube search capabilities, and a download engine supporting a variety of sites. Supported sites include Dailymotion, MyVideo, Vimeo or Clipfish.

If you want to download from YouTube, all you need to do is key in a search term and wait for the results listing to be populated. Here you see then a selection of matching videos along with a thumbnail still and the video’s title.

It appears that the program limits the results to eight videos tops, with no option to increase that limit. This is definitely not enough for broad searches, and you may need to work your way around the limitation by narrowing down your search terms.

A left-click sends the video to the download tab of the application, where you can configure the download options. Available for selection are the format that you want to download the video in, and the video quality.

ClipGrab comes with a built-in conversion engine to convert videos automatically. If you select, lets say wmv as the format of your YouTube video, you’ll notice that it will first be downloaded before it is converted locally into the right format.

You may wonder how you get to download videos from the other supported video hosting sites? You can either copy and paste video urls directly into the downloads tab to download those videos, or have the program monitor the Clipboard for you to make that an automated process.

The settings let you do the usual things, like configuring proxy connections or notifications. ClipGrab is a handy software, especially if you are into downloading videos from YouTube. I personally prefer Free FLV Converter as it displays more videos and makes the downloading of multiple videos at once more comfortable. clipGrab on the other hand is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Freemake Music Box, Local Player That Pulls Music From The Internet

When I’m looking for a particular song or band, I often visit YouTube first as it is almost 100% sure that someone has uploaded matching music videos to the video hosting site before. And while it is nice to use YouTube for that, I personally prefer desktop applications over Internet services. Maybe because I find it easier to control them while I’m using the browser for other tasks.

Freemake Music Box is a well thought out music player that takes advantage of the vast amount of music on today’s Internet. It seems to use YouTube exclusively for that, but I can’t say that with 100% certainty. All the songs that I tried were from YouTube.

When you first start the program you see a search form at the top, and an attached player with playlist attached to the left part of the program window.

 

To find music, enter a band name, artist, album or song into the search form and hit the enter key or click on the search button. The program populates the interface with results that reveal the band, album and song name, and the play time on first glance. You can click on the play button to play a song right away, or use the playlist button to add it to your playlist.

One interesting option that is available to you is to switch to the 200+ albums or artists listing instead. Say you have entered Nirvana into the search form. The initial search results have listed Nirvana songs only. If you switch to albums, you see the list of Nirvana albums, while artists will display Nirvana at the top, and below that cooperation with other bands or bands that also have Nirvana in the band name.

Especially the album listing is interesting, as you find all albums of the band listed here. You can either start to play an album right away, add it to your playlist, or click on it to see the song listing.

 

The program has a few shortcomings right now. Besides not revealing the music sources, it also ships without any options. It is for instance not possible to set a quality level for music, block certain tracks from appearing in the application, or to sync playlists between devices.

The developers have big plans for their application which will resolve some of the issues just mentioned. They plan to release iPad and Android versions, enable synchronization of music and playlists, add top music charts and create a web based version of the service.

All in all a great player for Windows users that could become a lot better in the future. The player requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0 to be installed on the system. The program is offered as a web-installer, and an offline installer.

Internet Radio Recorder StreamWriter 4.0 Released

StreamWriter is without doubt one of the most comfortable Internet radio recorders for the Windows operating system. It comes with a database of radio streams that are searchable directly in the interface. Here you can key in a genre for instance to get a list of matching results. The software can filter radio stations by genre, quality or type in addition to that. You then have the option to start listening to select radio stations right away, for instance to assess the quality of the stream, or to start recording as many as your computer and Internet connection is capable of handling.

The developers of the free application have just released StreamWriter 4.0 which improves the functionality of the Internet radio recorder significantly. One of the interesting new features is the option to configure post-processing options per stream. Post-processing can for instance be used to change the output format of the music or to write tags to the file. This can for instance be useful to add radio station information to the tags. New decoders have been made available in the post-processing stage. StreamWriter now supports MP3, AAC and OGG encoders, and can in addition convert AAC music files to M4A.

A new tag editor has been integrated to edit tags of the downloaded file right in the streamWriter interface. A second addition is the equalizer, available under Player > Equalizer, which can be used to fine-tune the stream and song playback in the program.

Music folders can be imported into the save songs listing of StreamWriter, which can be useful for a variety of reasons, including powering the program’s wishlist, playing the songs directly from within the interface, or editing them from within.

The program gets better and better with every release the developers put out. I suggest you give it a try if recording Internet radio is legal in the country you are living it. StreamWriter is available as a portable version and installer.

Increase internet Speed by 20%

Most of internet users require internet connection with a better speed so that they usually try to increase their internet speed. By default, In Windows operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc, the system reserves 20% of bandwidth from the internet connection for various services such as windows updates and some other updates. Therefore, we can tweak internet speed by getting this 20% of bandwidth since that reserved bandwidth may not be often used. If you enable this bandwidth reservation service, then you can change the bandwidth limit to 0%. However, if you disable this setting or not configure it, the system automatically reserves 20% from the bandwidth. Let us see how to increase the internet speed by getting reserved bandwidth.

At the beginning, Simply go to the Run and then type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
Now, you can see i will open a window as shown below. Here, in the left hand side Browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > QoS Packet Scheduler > Limit reservable BandwidthDouble click on the Limit reservable Bandwidth in the right side, it will open a window which can be used to configure Bandwidth reservation. Select the Enabled option button in the window and change the bandwidth limit value to 0% then click OK to apply the new settings.Here, you have to restart your computer and after that surf the internet so that you can feel the internet speed is much higher than before.

Andrew Breitbart, a controversial conservative blogger and commentator and one of the early proponents of Internet news, is dead.

According to CBS News and Breitbart's own site, the Los Angeles, native died this morning at the age of 43. The cause of death was not disclosed.

In the mid 1990s, Breitbart was among those who recognized the Web's likely impact on media, leading him to being corresponding with Matt Drudge, creator of the Drudge Report. He later served as an editor for the site and became a close Drudge friend and ally.

"In (Breitbart's first e-mail to Drudge) I said, 'Are you 50 people? A hundred people? Is there a building?'" Breitbart told CNET in 2005 about his first contact with Drudge. "I thought what he was doing was by far the coolest thing on the Internet. And I still do."

Drudge later introduced Breitbart to Arianna Huffington and Breitbart helped her create The Huffington Post. Drudge Report and the Huffington Post would become two of the Internet's most popular news and opinion sites.

"I was asked many times this morning for my thoughts on what Andrew meant to the political world," Huffington wrote today. "But all I can think of at the moment is what Andrew meant to me as a friend, starting from when we worked together -- his passion, his exuberance, his fearlessness."

Breitbart eventually launched his own Web sites, including Breitbart.tv, and Big Hollywood, where he lashed out at big entertainment, big media and Democrats.

In addition to his commentary, Breitbart was a journalist who broke the news that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) was texting revealing photographs of himself to young women. He also wrote a weekly column for the Washington Times.

Breitbart was sued for defamation by Shirley Sherrod, a former official in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, after he posted edited video clips of her allegedly making racist comments during a speech. Based on the clips and Breitbart's commentary, the NAACP condemned Sherrod and she was forced to resign.

The Obama administration and the Department of Agriculture later reviewed the entire video of her speech and eventually apologized and asked her to return to work. They concluded that Breitbart had taken her comments out of context. Breitbart tried to get the case thrown out but a court denied his request and Sherrod's case is still pending.

Increase internet Speed by 20%

Most of internet users require internet connection with a better speed so that they usually try to increase their internet speed. By default, In Windows operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc, the system reserves 20% of bandwidth from the internet connection for various services such as windows updates and some other updates. Therefore, we can tweak internet speed by getting this 20% of bandwidth since that reserved bandwidth may not be often used. If you enable this bandwidth reservation service, then you can change the bandwidth limit to 0%. However, if you disable this setting or not configure it, the system automatically reserves 20% from the bandwidth. Let us see how to increase the internet speed by getting reserved bandwidth.

At the beginning, Simply go to the Run and then type gpedit.msc and hit Enter.
Now, you can see i will open a window as shown below. Here, in the left hand side Browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > QoS Packet Scheduler > Limit reservable BandwidthDouble click on the Limit reservable Bandwidth in the right side, it will open a window which can be used to configure Bandwidth reservation. Select the Enabled option button in the window and change the bandwidth limit value to 0% then click OK to apply the new settings.Here, you have to restart your computer and after that surf the internet so that you can feel the internet speed is much higher than before.

Have you ever got a message like "Use Internet Explorer you dope" or "I DON'T HATE MOZILLA BUT USE IE OR ELSE…" whenever you tried to use or install Firefox?
This worm/virus is doing the rounds and it comes through pen-drives. You may not be able to access Orkut and Youtube as well, you will probably get a message like "Orkut is banned, you fool, hahahaha" or "Youtube is banned, you fool, hahahaha".

To remove this worm just follow the following steps :

(1) Press the keys CTRL, ALT & DEL simultaneously to bring up the Task Manager

(2) Click on the "Processes" tab.
Look for svchost.exe under the image name.
There will be many but look for the ones which have your username (what you login with) under the username.
Press the DEL key to kill these processes. It will give you a warning, Click on the "Yes" button.
Look for more svchost.exe files with your username and repeat. Do not kill svchost.exe with SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE as user name.

(3) Next, click on "My Computer".
In the address bar, type C:\heap41a and press enter. It is a hidden folder, and hence not visible if you try to view folders under C:\
Press "CTRL" and "A" keys simultaneously to select all the files in the folder.
Press the 'DEL' key - this will delete all the files selected.

(4) Click on "Start" button, click on "Run" and type "Regedit" without the quotes in the box.
In the menu, click on "Edit", then click on "Find".
Type “heap41a” without the quotes and press the "Enter" key.
You will see something like this “[winlogon] C:\heap41a\svchost.exe C:\heap(a number)\std.txt”
Select that by clicking on it and press the DEL key.
It will ask “Are you sure you want to delete this value”, click on 'Yes" button.
Close the registry editor.

The virus will have gone from your PC now.

(5) Lastly just make sure to delete the autorun.inf file and any folder whose name ends with .exe on any pen drive you may be using on your PC.
