More than two years after my initial review of the file sync and backup software Synchronicity comes an update to Synchronicity 6. Has the software changed in those two years, and if it did, for the better or worse? Lets find out.
The program is still offered as a portable version and installer, in a tiny 300 Kilobyte package. When you first launch the app after unpacking or installing, you are asked whether you’d like to enable automatic updates. The program then starts the profile listing where you see all synchronization and backup profiles that you have previously created, and a button to create new profiles.
The core information about the selected profile are displayed right on the screen. Here you see the selected source and destination root directories, the synchronization method, filters and scheduling.
New profiles are created in a separate window where you can configure the data syncing. Here you select the source and destination directories, with options to sync all or only select folders and files. As far as files go, you can select to either include or exclude (but not both) specific files or filetypes.
The program supports copying all matching files from the source directory to the destination directory, incremental synchronization (which copies everything but keeps the files that are already in the directory), or two-way incremental synchronization which makes sure that files in the source and destination directory are always kept in sync and never deleted.
So far so similar. When you use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-E in the main window, you enable Expert mode, which adds new advanced features to the program. The new settings add backup integrity checks and the dynamic creation of destination folders as options to the synchronization process. Besides expert mode, there is also a hidden feature section that need to be enabled in the profilename.sync file. Hidden features include excluding hidden files and folders, excluding specific folders, diff/file comparisons, text-only logs or beta features like wake-up actions. You can read up on both expert and hidden features in the program here.
Synchronicity 6 in particular comes with new command line options (the /all switch to sync all profiles), new hidden settings like the ability to ignore files that are older than a specified number of days, or the option to send log files to email addresses.

Add to that the standard features like the backup scheduler, a preview option to test run a profile, and a bunch of command line options, and you come to the conclusion that the program has evolved in the past two years without becoming bloated. Great program, highly recommended for users of the Windows operating system.

When I took a second look at the software updates monitor SUMO, I promised to look at other update reporting tools for the Windows operating system. DownloadCrew UpdateScanner was discovered by accident, while browsing the pages of the download portal.
The program is tightly integrated into the website, and it is necessary to create an account at the site before the program can start to verify the update status of installed applications. The DownloadCrew UpdateScanner requires those log in credentials before you can start using the program.
The program by default scans the software on system start, which may not be the most appropriate time to do so. You can switch the check to manual or to a specific hour of each day instead. If you select manual, you can click on the Scan Now button in the preferences to scan for software updates right away. There does not seem to be a button in the main application interface, which feels like an oversight.
I find it necessary to mention that you will find lots of noise in the program interface. Instead of just seeing updates and installed programs, you also get to see the latest downloads, featured products, best selling software and other information that are not related to the scan or updating. You actually may need to scroll down to see the your Updates section at the bottom of the page.
Here you see the programs that are not up to date on the system. Listed are the name, developer and version of the installed application, and the latest version among other information. A click on the get button or the see all link opens pages on the Downloadcrew website where the latest program versions can be downloaded. As far as updates goes, the program detected 24 of them, while SUMO only 22. It needs to be noted though that the Downloadcrew program lists all update versions in its interface, which means that it can happen that you see multiple updates listed for the same program. If you discount those, you come up with 20 updates.
At least one false positive was reported by the software. Installed on the test system was the image optimizer RIOT in version 0.4.6, and the software listed an update for the program to the same version. The program, like SUMO, does not link directly to the application’s project homepage. It takes two clicks to get there with this program, while it might take more than that with SUMO. SUMO on the other hand works without having to create an account first.
Interested users can download the latest version of the application from the Download Crew website. Keep in mind that it is currently available as a beta version on the site. It should be a no-brainer for users of the site. Everyone else may be better off with SUMO or other programs that do not require an account or add that many noise to the process.
Back in the good old days of the Internet, ftp was one of the prime services to transfer large files on the Internet. It is still a viable option today, but things have shifted away from ftp, especially in the home user market where many alternatives are now available.
Setting up a home ftp server can still be a useful thing to do, for instance if you like to share files with other members of the same local network, or if you want to make files available on the Internet from your own machine and not Internet storage.
Cerberus FTP Server is a free for personal use ftp server software for Windows. When you first start the program after installation, you are guided through the initial setup with a wizard. Here you create the initial user and permissions, select the initial root directory. The program tries to look-up the computer’s public IP address automatically, and will provide the administrator with connectivity tips if it notices that connections may be blocked from the outside.
The ftp server is started automatically after the configuration wizard, and you can start to connect to it right away. The default configuration preferences may need some adjusting though, as the maximum connections limit is set to 500 for instance, which would surely bring every home PC to its knees. You can disable log ins with a click on the Allow Logins checkbox for the time of the configuration.
A click on Configure opens the the server manager window where you can make changes to the initial ftp server configuration. This includes the connection limit and listening port for every IP address the ftp server is configured to work with, logging, remote access via web console, or messages that users see when they connect and disconnect.
The main server interface displays a service summary on the start page. Here you see the network and security overview, system messages, the current connections, and the listening interfaces. Tabs lead to server logs, connections, transfers and statistics.
Users can be created which is highly recommended for security purposes. Besides better tracking of user activities on the ftp, it enables you to customize which directories users see when they connect to the sever.
The IP Manager is the second window that you may want to look at before you start sharing the ftp server IP with clients. Here you can whitelist or blacklist IPs. This can be useful to allow connections only from specific IP addresses (e.g. only local IPs).
System administrators can create automatic rules for events in the event manager. Here it is possible to send an email when an update is available, run a third party program when a file gets deleted on the ftp, or launch server operations.

The popular free VPN (virtual private network) software Hotspot Shield has just received an update to Hotspot Shield 2.5 which comes with an impressive set of new features. Hotspot Shield lets you connect to a secure network with the click of a button to improve online security. Once you are connected to the Hotspot Shield network, it acts as a proxy for all your Internet connections. Websites that you visit, servers that you connect to, and people that you communicate with will only see the Hotspot Shield IP address, and not your own.
The encrypted secure connection furthermore ensures that your data is protected from snooping, which is especially useful when you are using public networks to connect to the Internet. This is the case in hotels, airports, corporate offices or public Wi-Fi hotspots.
The VPN may also allow you to bypass firewalls, for instance on your University campus or office. Networks are often designed to block access to a set of websites. This can be sites like Facebook, Google Mail or YouTube for instance.
Hotspot Shield 2.5 comes with a new network detection feature that tries to automatically detect if the network your are currently on is secure or insecure.

The developers of the program have added options to the program to help users take advantage of the new feature. The options can for instance be set to automatically establish a connection with Hotspot Shield if a new or unknown network has been identified. They can alternatively be set to warn the user when that happens, or do nothing at all.
The new version of Hotspot Shield can be installed without administrative privileges, and program use does not require them either. The program indicates the connection status in the browser window in the new version, which can act as a visual reminder (with options to turn it off in the program settings).
AnchorFree, the company behind Hotspot Shield, have added malware protection in a previous version of the VPN software. This warns the user when a malicious site is requested. This warning, along with a remote (safe) snapshot of the requested site are then displayed in the browser, with options to leave, or to continue on to the real site.
Hotspot Shield 2.5 can be downloaded from the developer website. Make sure you pay attention to theinstallation, as you may otherwise end up with a Hotspot Shield browser toolbar that you had no intention to install. The free version is limited in certain ways, including bandwidth, and displays ads while running. Users can upgrade to Hotspot Shield Elite for unlimited bandwidth, and ad free internet browsing.
I reviewed the Software Updates Monitor (SUMO) application for Windows in 2008 for the first time, and included it in the “battle of the software updaters” before that as well. Yesterday, version 3.0.1.143 was released by the developer of the program, and I decided to use that opportunity to take another look at the program, to see what has changed, improved and if features that needed improvement have been improved by the author.
I recommend you download the sponsor-free version of the program on the KC Softwares download page, as you otherwise will encounter toolbar and adware offers during program installation. The program interface has not changed a lot in the four years, but since it was functional then, it is not an issue at all.
Let me give you a quick rundown of the program’s functionality first. The application has been designed to scan the system for installed software, to check the installed version with the latest program version online. It is recommended to keep software up to date on the system, as newer versions sometimes improve a program’s stability, close security issues or add new features that you may want to make use of.
You can click on the Scan button in the program interface to scan the local system for installed software. Keep in mind that the scan won’t find portable software, but you can add portable software and other applications that have not been recognized manually later on with a click on the add button.
A click on the check button compares the installed program version with a master server online. Sump divides results into up-to-date, minor updates and major updates. You can sort programs by group, so that all major updates are listed on top, followed by the minor updates. The program lists the product name and company, as well as the local version and available update version in the program interface.
A double-click or the selection of an app and a click on Get Update opens a web page on the KC Softwares website listing the different versions, and links to a Google Search and various software portals (including Softpedia, Snapfiles and FileHippo).
There is still no option to download programs directly from within the application, or to initiate a bulk download of all program setups of applications that need updating. This was one of the suggestions that I had back then to improve the program.
You may also notice that some of the findings link to programs that you cannot update, for instance when they are listed in a folder that you have no control over. You can still enable the inclusion of beta versions in the application, which are then displayed as the latest version in the program interface. Keep in mind that you may see program updates in this case that are not really updates for the installed version. If you have Chrome Stable installed for instance, you will see a major update to Chrome Dev listed in the update listing. There are only a few update proposals that seem to link to a wrong version of the software. Sometimes you may see an update for a program that you do not want to update, for instance the next major version of a commercial program that you would have to pay for. You can report errors, or choose to ignore the update instead so that it is no longer displayed.
It still pays to go through the list once a month or so, to make sure all of your software is up to date on the system. It actually does not take that long to do that, even if you have to use a search engine to find a download link. You may even end up with a newer version than the one listed. This happened sporadically during tests.
The program itself is very responsive and fast both in the scanning of installed software and the checking of program updates on the Internet. It is surprising that the interface and functionality has not changed that much in the past four years. It is likely that a lot of work went into the program database and and data collection routines, as they are without doubt the most important parts of the software updater.
Sumo is a nice program to have on your computer to search for updates. It is more of a notification tool that it is a program that will do all the hard lifting for you though.

System maintenance tools have a variety of purposes, from freeing up disk space to defragmenting the hard drive or removing invalid file references from the system. When it comes to tools for the job, you’d probably hear program names like CCleaner, Advanced System Care or Comodo System Cleaner the most.
FixBee is a new contender that is currently concentrating on disk optimization and cleanup only. Lets take a look at the program and its installation process.
Winodws users should pay close attention to the setup, as they’d otherwise end up with a new search provider, homepage and browser toolbar. The program itself opens up in a nice clean interface. The program options are divided into the two tabs Disk Optimizer and System CleanUp.
Disk Optimizer
You can select the drive that you want to optimize. This basically checks for file fragmentation and runs a defragmention on the selected drive. The program scans the selected hard drive or partition first to display a fragmentation analysis. The analysis displays the number of non-optmized files, the drive’s optimization score, and whether it is recommended to defragment the hard drive.
The information should help users make the decision whether the drive or partition needs to be optimized or not.
System CleanUp
A start scan now button is displayed that starts the system scan for temporary and junk files to free up disk space. The application offers no filtering options prior to the scan. The results are divided into junk files, temporary files and empty folders. Each item is listed with its name, folder path and file size (if it’s a file). The listing offers no sorting options, or file or folder opening options to check on files.
Both operations can be scheduled to run daily, weekly or once on a specific date and time.
Closing Words
The program lacks options that other programs provide. The overall cleaning efficiency is for instance not as thorough as that of CCleaner, BleachBit or comparable programs. The developers could improve the nice looking program significantly if they’d add more cleanup locations and filtering options.
