If you're trying to hunt down how to say difficult to pronounce words, especially proper nouns, tech blog Digital Inspiration suggests searching YouTube for videos with closed captioning to hear how to pronounce them properly.
If you're searching for the pronunciation of a standard word, search Google with the "define:" paramater for the quickest method to get a pronunciation. However, Google doesn't work for proper nouns or non-English words. For that, YouTube can be a great help. From YouTube, search for any word followed by a comma and cc, for instance, "mordor, cc." This pulls up all the videos with closed captioning. Click the close captioning button below the video for the transcript, search for the word you want to learn, and click on it to be taken directly the that section of the video. It's a pretty handy trick for learning how to pronounce proper nouns like city names, celebrities, and more.
If you do not know the correct pronunciation of certain words or names, you can use closed-captions videos on YouTube to learn how to pronounce any difficult word.
If you don’t know the correct pronunciation of certain words or names and you are too embarrassed to ask, no worries as there are dozens of websites that can help you learn how to pronounce any word on your own.
The quickest option is Google. Use the define: search operator with any word and Google will show a little audio icon next to the word’s definition. Click the icon to listen to the audio pronunciation.
define:croissant [Google Dictionary Search]
The pronunciation feature in Google is however not available for non-English words or names of people but that is where YouTube videos can be of great help.
Let’s say we want to learn how to pronounce Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano that disrupted air travel across Europe in 2010 for several days. Here’s what you can do.
Go to YouTube.com and search for any word followed by “,cc” – this is a YouTube search operator that will only show videos that have closed captions.
Eyjafjallajokull, cc [YouTube search for videos with closed captions]
In YouTube search results, pick a video that has that particular word in the transcript. Then click the transcript button and jump to the line containing that word (see screenshot).
You can now hear the speaker in the YouTube video using that word and that should give you a good idea of the correct pronunciation. And since YouTube has users around the globe, you can use the same closed-captions trick to learn how a word is pronounced in different countries of the world – just pick a different video from the search results.
Userscripts can improve the individual experience on the video hosting site YouTube tremendously. They can basically change every aspect of the site, from its layout to new functionality that a lot of users will find helpful. The following guide looks at the 5 most popular YouTube scripts that are still working on Youtube’s latest design. When you head over to the Userscripts.org website, you will notice that it hosts hundreds of YouTube modification scripts. The majority of scripts that you find there have been last updated in previous years, which usually is a good indicator that they may not be working anymore on the video hosting site.
All userscripts on this page have been tested in Firefox and Google Chrome. Chrome users may not get access to all settings, but the scripts worked all fine at the time of writing.
Chrome users can simply install the script on the linked pages. They become available directly afterwards in the browser.
Firefox users need to install the Greasemonkey or Scriptish extension first, before they can do the same.
The scripts may work in other browsers, but that has not been tested.
The YouTube Better Watch Page script improves the “watch-page” on YouTube in several ways. It tries to rebuild a previous version of the page by moving the description panel to the right sidebar away from the location beneath the video. It furthermore displays the uploader avatar image in that description, and moves the subscribe button to the panel as well.
Firefox users can access the script’s settings to hide or move elements on the watch page. This includes the ability to auto-expand the description panel, auto-hide the category and tags, or to hide suggestions on the page.
The YouTube Enhancer script packs a lot of functionality. When you open it on a video page, you see that it has added options on top of the video, and directly below it. These options allow you to download the video in the quality that you deem fit (from low to the highest quality available, to change the video quality of the current video with a comfortable slider, and to use additional playback controls like looping videos, jumping to the beginning or end, turning of the lights, or rewinding it.
Most scripts and extensions that offer loop or repeat functionality on YouTube replay the video from beginning to end. Better Loopy for YouTube lets you select the start and end time of the loop individually. It also offers some advanced functionality, like a bookmarklet that lets you play all videos on any given YouTube page.
How to use userscripts
YouTube Center is another all-in-one script that is packed with functionality. It offers many of the features that the other scripts offer, like downloading and repeating videos, selecting a desired resolution in which videos should be played or a desired player size. It on top of that offers features, like an option to prevent videos from auto-buffering or auto-playing, one to prevent ads from showing up, and an option to download the audio of a video as an mp3 file.
You find other scripts on the official userscript website, as well as browser add-ons that help you make the most out of YouTube. The four scripts listed above should be a good start, and for many users, should be all that is needed for a better experience on the site.
Do you use other scripts or extensions? If so, let everyone know about them in the comments.

If you do not have the time or skill to edit your videos locally before you upload them to the popular video hosting site YouTube, you’d probably grew fond of the video editor that YouTube added last year to the site. While pretty basic in functionality, it can be used to correct a few issues with your videos. Features offered include trimming and rotating, as well as adding effects and exchanging the audio of the video.
YouTube has just announced a new feature that they have added for users who upload videos to the video platform. One-click video improvements are now available to all video uploaders. Videos get automatically analyzed by YouTube when they are uploaded, and users will now be informed if videos could be improved automatically.
When you upload a video that could use a fixup, you’ll see a notification bar on the Upload page and in your Video Manager. Click the button to fix it, and you’ll see a side by side preview to decide if you want to accept the edits.
A preview of the optimized version is displayed next to the original. You can now click on the okay button to go ahead with the optimization, or click on no thanks to keep the video in its original form. Users who do not like the new feature at all can furthermore check the don’t ask me again box to never be bothered by the new feature again.
According to the post on the official YouTube blog, the optimizer can fix videos that are either too dark or too shaky.
It is also interesting to note that the original video can be restored at a later point in time. Mobile video uploaders apparently won’t get the notification right away. They do however see the suggestions when they open YouTube from a desktop PC.

The best moments you capture on film are often the roughest. Luckily, If you're uploading a video for sharing, YouTube automatically detects your video's problems and asks you to click just one button to fix them. YouTube's editor previously offered a stabilization method that took hours, but this is just an "I'm Feeling Lucky" for video. Google says the feature is rolling out to YouTube accounts, so look for it soon if you don't see it today.

Google in recent years has started to add advertisement to the popular video hosting platform YouTube. Ads on YouTube nowadays come in a variety of ways, from sponsored channels to banner ads or in-video advertisement. The video hosting site currently supports two different kinds of in-video ads. First a video ad before the actual video requested by the user, and then ad overlays when the requested video is playing on the screen.
These ads either benefit YouTube and Google completely, or if revenue sharing is enabled, the original uploader of the video as well.
A percentage of the site’s user base may prefer to bypass ads to fully enjoy the contents without overlay images being displayed to them while the video is playing.
YouTube AdsFree is an Opera extension that removes the majority of ads on YouTube. The latest version of the extension blocks the ad servers so that the ads cannot be displayed anymore on the screen. The description lists popup ads as the main ad form that gets blocked. These are the overlay ads when you start watching the videos.
The extension furthermore blocks full window ads and promoted ads on YouTube and on websites who have embedded the videos. There is also an option available to remove branded banners, for instance on the VEVO channel, from being displayed on YouTube.
It is not really clear if the ad blocker covers 100% of ads, or if some ad forms remain on the site. While I personally have not seen any video ads before the actual video, it could be that these ads are still shown on YouTube.
Opera users who would like to try out YouTube AdsFree can install the latest version of the extension on the Opera Extensions website.
If you are not using Opera as your main browser, you may be interested in this guide that explains how to skip ads on YouTube.
