Aldiko Updates, Unveils New Version for Android Tablets [Video]

 Android: Our favorite ereader for Android, Aldiko, rolled out a tablet version that spans the entire display and is tweaked for reading ebooks on a larger screen. The layout is much more landscape friendly if you have it in landscape mode, and best of all, it's still completely free.

The new version is still missing a few features, but it comes with all of the features of the phone version laid out in a tablet-friendly format. The home screen displays your library on the right on a bookshelf and the app menu on the left. When you open a book, you can toggle light or dark backgrounds, change the font size and type, adjust the margins, supports bookmarking, highlighting, and more.

Miro Media Player 5 Release Candidate Out, Final Version Soon

The developers of Miro have released a first release candidate of the upcoming Miro 5 version. Miro at its core is a media player with Internet connectivity built right into the software. The software can play back media formats and supports the playing and downloading of media from the Internet.

You can use it to manage your local video and audio library, go to video hosting sites like YouTube from within the program interface to watch and download videos from there,  subscribe to podcasts, download torrent files, or make use of the channels and shows offered by Miro. Channels include the ever popular Ted Talks, Buzz out Loud or the Discovery Channel Video podcast. You can subscribe to these channels to receive updates when new items are published.

 

A lot has changed since our initial review in 2008 and last year’s update to Miro 4. The developers behind Miro have now released the first release candidate of the upcoming version 5. This is a test version which is not suited yet for productive environments. While the majority of features work without larger issues, you will come upon  a few bugs in that version, like the inability to minimize the program version using the button at the top of the window.

When you look at the program interface you will notice that it looks more or less identical to previous versions. The developers claim massive updates to the Windows backend of the software.

The new version of Miro now supports downloading HD videos from Vimeo feeds, faster device syncing and format conversions, song information and album art lookup, and a new album view mode that groups together songs by album and artist.

Interested users can download the release candidate of Miro 5 from the official blog. Downloads are provided for Windows and Mac Os X, and the source code.

New users should check out the Get Started section for an overview of some of the things that Miro allows them to do.

Google Developing A Chrome Metro Version For Windows 8

The two user interfaces that Windows 8 ships with make it more time and development intensive for developers to provide a working version of their software for both interfaces. Microsoft for instance makes available two versions of their Internet Explorer 10 browser when the operating system launches. First the classic Internet Explorer for the desktop that ships with all the bells and whistles included, and then the Metro UI Internet Explorer that is more bare-bones. This particular version of Internet Explorer does away with plug-ins, starts in full screen and makes use of a minimalistic interface.

Third party browser developers like Mozilla, Google, Opera or Safari are getting into a predicament. They can continue providing their user base with a desktop version of the browser, but that would mean that their users would have to use Internet Explorer 10 in Metro.

The other option is to use development resources to build a special Metro version of the browser, to make it available in the Metro UI as well.

We already mentioned that Mozilla is currently developing a Metro version of Firefox for the Windows 8 operating system. The developers aim to have a proof-of-concept version ready with Firefox 14.

Windows 8 News is now reporting that Google is also working on a Metro UI version of the Chrome web browser. Google’s planning to bring the desktop version of the Chrome browser to Microsoft’s Metro user interface. We do not now the development status or a first release date for the version, nor how the new Metro version of Chrome will be distributed to the Windows 8 user base.

It is likely that the version will share – which means synchronize – information which other versions of the browser that are installed on the system. We already know that this is possible as Microsoft is doing the same with the Metro and desktop versions of Internet Explorer.

It is always good to have choice when it comes to applications. As it stands now, Windows 8 users will have options to use Firefox or Chrome instead of Internet Explorer in the operating system’s start page. No word yet whether we will see Metro versions of Opera or Safari as well.

Mozilla Begins Work on Firefox Metro Version

If you have followed the development progress of Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8 closely, you may know that it ships with two different versions of the Internet Explorer browser. First a standard desktop version of Internet Explorer 10, and then a second version for the new Metro user interface part of the operating system.

This opens up a new predicament for other browser developers as their browsers suddenly only work in one part of the operating system, and not the other. While it is possible to install browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Opera in Windows 8, they only work in the desktop environment and not the Metro UI part of the browser.

Mozilla were the first to announce that they would start to develop a Metro UI compatible version of the Firefox web browser to make the browser available in the Metro interface as well.

Development has begun on the new version, and the developers plan to release a proof of concept demo in the second quarter.

In order to deliver a compelling Firefox for Windows 8 Metro experience, we need to understand what’s possible. A technology proof of concept is the first step. This is not a Alpha or a Beta, but should demonstrate the feasibility of Firefox in Windows 8 Metro. (Timing here is dependent on when Microsoft releases their Windows 8 consumer preview and developer documentation.)

Mozilla developer Brian Bondy revealed additional information about the Metro version of the Firefox browser in a blog post. According to this post, Mozilla can build a Metro browser that is equally powerful as the desktop browser. One restriction seems a bit odd.

Unfortunately a browser can only participate in Metro mode if it is the default browser. So if Firefox is not the default browser on a system, you can’t use it in Metro mode. This is a decision made by Microsoft.

This basically means that Firefox can only be used in the Metro UI if it is the default system browser. It is also not clear at this point in time how the web browser will be distributed.

Mozilla’s move to develop a Metro UI version of Firefox makes sense in a number of ways, including usability and consistency. Firefox users who work with the browser on the desktop, may for instance prefer to access their browser bookmarks and information in the Metro version, instead of having to work with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 10 there.

New Version of Todo.txt Touch for Android Now Available

 Just pushed a new version 0.8 of Todo.txt Touch for Android, which offers a brand spanking new homescreen widget, tappable contact info, better search results, and more. Download it to your Android device now.

In addition to the new homescreen widget pictured here, this release detects email addresses and phone numbers in task text and offers a one-tap shortcut to the dialer or your device's email handler. For example, if you have a task that reads "Email joe@example.com or call 718-555-1212," when you tap on that task, the action menu looks like this. Tap on the email address to compose a message or the phone number to pre-fill your phone's dialer.

Searching todo.txt for keywords now works better, too. If you've got two tasks that read "Process pull requests" and "Request pull on project," in earlier versions if you searched for "pull request" you'd only see the first task. Instead of only displaying exact phrase matches, version 0.8 ORs your terms, so a search for "pull request" returns both tasks.

More interface improvements: when you scroll down your todo.txt file and complete or delete a task, the app remembers your scroll position and keeps you in place. This makes processing consecutive tasks easier. The filter interface has been redesigned to match the rest of the application, in white and green. See it here. Finally, thanks to the latest version of the Dropbox SDK and Android LINT, this release is more secure, more performant, and less buggy.
