How To Visit Another College

College is great. It’s basically Hogwarts, except instead of magic there’s booze, and instead of noseless wizards trying to kill you, there’s more booze. Fair trade, I say. But as good as your college is, eventually you get used to it. You have your friends and your routine and suddenly that Freshman year excitement moves to a Sophomore slump followed by the Junior writing-comedy-articles-in-a-class-you-are-failing phase. But if you want to put a little more spice into your collegiate marriage, it’s time to visit a new one. And to do that best, you need a few rules.

Don’t be a jerk to your hosts

Your hosts, for better or worse, are your anchor. They’re the ones who give you a place to stay, they’re the ones who are going to be making introductions, and, most importantly, they are your friends you were willing to spend a weekend with. But, in a different way, they are going to be really frustrating.

“Small house parties?” You ask. “Let’s rage! Party time!”

“Don’t study” you say at four in the afternoon. “It’s party time!”

“Breakfast?” you say. “More like drink-fast! Party time!”

First, I think you have a drinking problem. Second, you’re forgetting the first things guests forget: that their hosts have lives too. And like they’re accommodating you, you have accommodate them. Maybe they have a problem with that specific frat you want to go to, or they aren’t twenty-one yet. Maybe, dude, what the hell, that’s their sister! The important thing is to be responsible, open-minded, and to remind them that in your defense, their sister is a stone-cold fox.

Enjoy the small things

See, you’re probably bored of your school, or, at the least, you will be. You know what late food spots are open and what to get there. You know the parties, and who will be at the parties, and how they’ll go. But another school is an opportunity to find the joy in all the things you ignored. A different late-night food item? Do it. Different letters on the frat? Crazy. A bunch of clowns outside making balloon animals for everyone? Insane, except at Clown College. Everyone there is bored of their small things already: use this as an excuse to enjoy all the small things they forgot about.

Manage your expectations

The problem is that you came to visit a school for a weekend; planning on parties, adventures, and day drinking and before you know it your daydreams involve beautiful New York girls inordinately impressed with someone from the far away land of Massachusetts. When you don’t know what’s going on, your hopes aren’t just hopes: they’re plans. You’re planning on the best weekend of your life and you can’t expect that; it just happens. It’s a surprise when the hamburger-and-whiskey truck breaks down outside your house full of vaguely ethnic girls who are very impressed by mediocre rapping. You can’t just count on it.  And for this school it’s just an ordinary weekend. They did not receive a memo about your arrival, and if they did, it probably wasn’t good. Expect the ordinary; if you want the extraordinary it’s up to you to make it happen.

YOLO is not an excuse

YOLO stands for, “You only live once” and is often ironically used to approve of things that will make that living once a whole lot shorter. There’s an idea that visiting another college means you can do what you want. That’s not true. Because that means the whole reason you don’t do this stuff at your college; the reason you don’t act like a tool at home, the reason you don’t run shirtless there, the reason you don’t try to catch pigeons in a giant net and eat them like a drumstick just to show them whose boss is just because of your reputation. I don’t like that kind of thinking. Because character is what you do when no one notices, and character is who you really are. If you’re a jerk at a different college, if you can’t wait to tool hard where no-one knows you, well, maybe you’ve been a secret jerk all along. It’s like the end of the Wizard of Oz except kinda depressing.

YOLO is also an excuse, when done well

YOLO isn’t an excuse to act like a jerk. YOLO is, however, an excuse to make the world your playground where you otherwise can’t. And a different college is a playground.

Do you remember that movie where Jim Carrey has to say “yes” to everything? Of course you don’t, but it got made. Try to be like Jim Carrey in that movie: being payed millions of dollars to coast on the same shtick over and over. If you can’t swing that, just keep saying yes.

See, all the tiny obstacles to “yes” are gone here: you’re not bored of these things or these people. You don’t have your comfy bed and Netflix to go back to; you have a floor to pass out on. Away from home, anything can happen, and if you keep momentum forward, your odds go up. Of course I want to get food later, guys I just met. Absolutely lets head to some other party. I’ll take your word for it that cops think this is really funny and in no way will arrest us.

Be yourself, except when another self is more fun

At other colleges and parties, you can be who you want. I don’t encouraging lying, so to speak, but self-creation is an amazing thing. It’s the American Dream, really, to be exactly who you want to be if only for a night and now, you can. So change your name and age if you want. Change your school if you want. At other colleges I have different names and ages sometimes. If I ask a girl where she’s from, I often blurt out “me too!” This is how I have been, among other things, Dutch, Lebanese, and Australian. I just roll with it; once I said I co-wrote Paul Blart, Mall Cop and acted like I was really embarrassed about it.

This isn’t as sketchy as it sounds. People figure out you aren’t Australian after you talk about how you drive your kangaroo to school, just hoping in the pouch and steering through telepathy. People know you did not co-write Paul Blart, Mall Cop because you are not the saddest man in the world. And people know you are not good personal friends with Young Jeezy as Young Jeezy is an intensely closed-off man with many entourage members but few true friends. But you get to believe it. And that’s all you need.

***

That’s the gist of it. Good luck on all your adventures. And if at your college you ever see a guy in a blue shirt, clutching whiskey and telling some girl about the creative process behind Paul Blart in a terrible British accent, come say hello. My name is Michael Young, and I’m a millionaire dog-trainer. Play along and I’ll buy you a drink.

Make an “Internet TV”

There seems to be a contest going on between Apple and Google about whose “Internet TV” is going to finally take off.  However,  I find their versions of “Internet TV” to be pointless when one can create one themselves in about 30 seconds.

These days all of the content that is available through a television service is also available through the internet. Whether you have to download it, stream it on the network’s website, watch it on Hulu, or watch it on Netflix, you can always find it. So, for a while now I have been watching television solely through my old laptop computer which I leave connected to my television set with an HDMI cable and then I use a wireless keyboard and mouse as a remote.  This version of  TV watching can be annoying if you are an avid watcher, but if you just follow a couple shows and enjoy watching movies then this a perfect solution to save you money whilst getting more features than a traditional TV.  This homemade way of watching TV is beneficial for many reasons, the main one being that you no longer have to pay a monthly fee to Dish or Direct or whoever you buy TV service from. Other benefits include having the ability to play your music collection through your TV’s speakers, the ability to watch YouTube videos, stream Netflix, or to simply surf the internet with a huge screen.

If you want your Internet TV to be permanently connected but you do not have an extra computer, you could always buy one of these very cheap and tiny desktop computers.  At the very least, if you have both a TV and a computer it is good to know how to connect them (simply with an HDMI cable) so you can watch movies on something bigger than your fifteen inch laptop.

Firefox Silent Updates, All You Need To Know about The New Feature

By now you must have heard about the silent update feature that Mozilla is currently working on for the Firefox web browser.  I first covered silent updates back in October of 2010 when Mozilla started to announce plans to integrate a better updating  mechanism into the browser.  The basic idea behind the move was to improve the updating process for the user. As of now, updates are applied to the browser on start up, which may prevent Firefox users from using the browser when it gets started on the system. Vista and Windows 7 users furthermore may see UAC prompts when Firefox is updated, which need to be resolved as well before updates can be applied.

The silent update feature is made up of three core components, of which one is already integrated into the current stable version of the browser.

Default Add-on compatibility – This feature is already integrated in all versions of the browser from Firefox 10 onwards. It basically assumes that Firefox add-ons are compatible, even though their maximum version compatibility may state otherwise.Mozilla Maintenance Service – The second component is a service under Windows, that is working in a similar fashion as Google Updater. This service works around the UAC prompt, so that updates require no additional user action when they are applied. This feature is planned for Firefox 12 which Mozilla aims to release at the end of April 2012.Background Updates – This is the third and final component. Updates will be installed while the browser is running once the component is included into Firefox.  This keeps the start up time at usual levels, as add-ons have already been installed while the browser was running. The feature will land in Firefox 13 or 14.

Firefox users who do not want the Mozilla Maintenance Service on their system can block it in the Firefox options. To do that, they need to do the following:

Click on Firefox > OptionsSwitch To Advanced > Update in the Options windowLocate Use a background service to install updates and uncheck the box.

It seems as if the service will be installed automatically. It is not really clear if this happens during an update, or only for new Firefox installations. If you select to uninstall it, it will not be installed again with future updates.  If the service gets removed, Firefox will be updated as before.

You find more information about the silent update process in Firefox at Brian Bondy’s blog.

Adobe Flash Player 11.2, Air 3.2 Released

Adobe Flash Player 11.2 has been released by Adobe a few hours ago. The download page is already linking to the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Flash Player for all supported operating systems, and users who prefer to download offline installers can do so on the Adobe Flash Player Distribution page.

As with every new version of Flash Player, it is recommended to update as soon as possible. While not a security or maintenance release, Flash Player 11.2 adds features to the software that make it more powerful in many regards. A demonstration site, available under gaming.adobe.com, is unfortunately not accessible at the time of writing.

Building on that innovative foundation, Flash Player 11.2 adds key new core features for gaming, including mouse lock, relative coordinates, and right and middle –click support. Combined with Stage3D, you can now build fully immersive games in the browser, whether a first-person shooter or a real-time strategy game using infinite map scrolling. It also extends hardware driver support back to 2008, enabling full hardware acceleration on more computers than ever.

Developers who plan to make use of premium features in Adobe Flash Player 11.2 can do so free of charge until August 1. After August 1, features will be available for use with a license. Payments kick in for applications that exceed 50k in revenue. According to Adobe, premium features within Adobe Air will be royalty free.

Flash Player 11.2 seems to be all about those premium features for gaming, but there is more to it than that. Windows users can for instance install an automatic background update service that will take care of all the necessary updating of the player whenever new stable versions of it get released.

Windows users will see a prompt where they can decided to install the background service, configure it to notify only, or keep it off of their system completely.

The service’s full name is Adobe Flash Player Update Service , its description reads:

This service keeps your Adobe Flash Player installation up to date with the latest enhancements and security fixes.

Just like Google Updater, it is set to be started manually, and will be triggered by a task in the system’s Task Scheduler.

Another new feature of Adobe Flash Player 11.2 is its multithreaded video decoding architecture, which improves full HD video playback on supported devices.

The new version of Adobe Air introduces new technologies on supported mobile devices.

Adobe AIR 3.2 is a milestone release that brings the most advanced Flash technology to iPhone/iPad (iOS) and Android phones and tablets, making it easier than ever to create uncompromised experiences everywhere. AIR 3.2 introduces Stage3D graphics technology for iOS and Android, enabling jaw-dropping visuals with efficient, 1000x faster native GPU rendering performancin your pocket.

Here is a video that is talking about Flash Player 11.2.

How To Uninstall Google Chrome Themes

I tested the My Chrome Theme yesterday which allowed me to create a custom basic theme for the Chrome browser. It was quite an interesting experience, as it offered options to change the background image and various interface colors. One of the effects was that the default theme was replaced by the custom theme that I created with the help of the extension. After trying the extension for some time, I decided to remove the installed theme again to restore the default theme in the browser. And that’s where the searching for a theme removing option began.

Since I never uninstalled themes before in the browser, I had no clue how to do that. I first tried to find the installed themes in the extensions listing, only to find out that the themes were not listed there. I then started to look through the options to find the setting that would allow me to switch the currently installed theme back to the browser’s default theme.

After some digging in the options I discovered the themes setting under Personal Stuff. It consisted of a single button which would reset the theme of the browser to the default theme when clicked on.

A click on reset to default theme restores the default browser theme.  Since there is no theme listing available in the browser, it appears as if Chrome only keeps a copy of the current theme and the default theme. All other themes seem to be replaced automatically whenever a new theme or the default theme get installed in the browser.

This feature makes Chrome less flexible than Firefox for instance, which keeps all previous themes listed in the browser until they are uninstalled in the add-ons manager of the browser. I personally like Firefox’s way of keeping all previously installed themes preferable to Chrome’s way of only keeping a record of the current and default theme. What’s your take on this?

Grooveshark Asks Users To Subscribe, Or Else, Unskippable Ads

There is nothing wrong with financing a service or website with advertisement. There will always be users who will use ad blockers or other scripts to get rid of those ads, but the majority will understand that these are what pay the bills and keep the site going. The wrong kind of advertisement on a site can have an ill-effect on the site’s reputation. The wrong kind in this regard refers both to what the ads try to sell, their placement, or type.

Grooveshark, ever since it has been introduced in 2007,  monetized the site with ads and subscriptions. Ads were displayed as banners on the page, and subscriptions for Grooveshark Plus or Grooveshark Anywhere got rid of them, and added new features to the music streaming service at the same time.  This includes access to the Grooveshark desktop app, or unlimited Grooveshark access on the mobile app.

Matthew A. Hansen was one of the first Grooveshark users who reported about a more aggressive monetization strategy on Grooveshark. According to his information, Grooveshark displayed a Keep the music going screen to him which explained that operating the service costs money, and that Grooveshark because of this is asking for support.

Options available here were to pay money for an uninterrupted experience, or select the $0 option to continue the free ride. Matthew did select the free option, which lead to a video engagement ad that was shown to him. This was a 40 second YouTube video that started to play right away. While pausing and skipping is possible, a message is displayed in this case that is explaining that credits are not given if the video is not watched from the beginning to the end.

We have detected that you have tried to skip part of the video. You will not get credit if you skip around the video. Please watch the video from the beginning through the end

It appears that Grooveshark is rolling out a credit-based system for free users of the service. It is not really clear how much credits users get when they watch the video, and for how long they can listen to music on Grooveshark with a credit.

Watching a single video gives credits that are good for listening to four hours of music on the Grooveshark website.

I tried to get the video ad to be displayed on Grooveshark for the better half of an hour and did not succeed. This could mean a number of things, like that it is still being rolled out to all users, that it is only active for registered users, or that you need to listen more than that to see the ad.

I do not think that $2 for a month of music is too much to ask for on the other hand, even with all the free alternatives available on today’s Internet.  Forcing ads on users on the other hand is not the way to go forward. Many will probably leave Grooveshark for other services instead of paying up for uninterrupted music on the site.

What’s your take on this?
